I have a requirement to rename a Win2k domain controller. I'm told it's possible, but can anyone tell me exactly how ?

You have to demote it...:-(. If this is your only DC, and you have a spare machine around (anything will do temporarily), I would highly recommend installing server on it and promoting it to a second DC in your domain. This way, you won't lose any AD info. Once you've allowed time for replication, transferred all your FSMO roles and/or other services over to the temporary box, demote the first DC, remove it from the domain, rename it, rejoin, and promote it back. Then, do the reverse transfer process....
Of course, this is only if you care about saving your current domain data....

After backing everything up you can go into directory services restore mode and change it there. It is not something I would choose to do though if I could avoid it at all

brontosauros is right. The only thing I would add is make sure the replication worked! Good luck. [pc2] Glen A. Johnson
