We have a peer to peer W2K network using a single workgroup to connect 5 identical w2k workstations ... we have just installed a w2k domain server and have tried to switch the 5 machines to start using the domain instead of the workgroup ... three of the machines converted with no issue but the other two keep being rejected stating there is no network connection ... these boxes are all connected together wih an smc 8 port router (WAN port is connected to a Cable modem) ... all the boxes can ping each other and have access to the internet however the DNS is not recognizing the servers name, and the workstation domain diaglog on these two boxes are rejecting the new domain name.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening here?

Bjdobs,

What is the exact error message you are receiving when attempting to join these machines to the domain?

Compare ipconfig /all on all boxes. Can everybody ping everybody? Glen A. Johnson

From the Identification Changes Dialog after entering a Member of domain foo and then pressing OK I get the following error.

Network Identification (RED X) Dialog (Full Stop)

The following error occured validating the name "foo"

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

TCPIP is set up to use the Router as the primary DNS and the Server as the secondary DNS ... there is an anomily with ping even before adding the server ... two of the boxes do not respond to ping which I attributed to a configuration setting ... one of the two boxes with this error have been able to connect to all the shared resources required and also shares a printer which appears do be working from all stations as well ... ping does work from all stations to the server

How is your TCP/IP setup on the workstations that are working? (I.E - What is the primary DNS and Secondary DNS entries on the machines that are working?)

All 5 workstations have Primary DNS as the Router and Secondary as the new Server

Did you compare ipconfig /all? How about route print, see what that tells you. Glen A. Johnson

Check the Active Directory. The user must be a member of domain user.

all are it the active directory ... I will have to wait until later to try the route command as this is a live system.

route print returned no usefull info and ipconfig /all just identified the the difference between the DOMAIN configured workstation and the workgroup.

I stepped through all the services, network configs and still found nothing ... as a last resort I turned off Norton Antivirus 2k2 ... this appears to have fixed the issue on one workstation however the last workstation now has a Credential Conflict ... how do I start tracking down where the conflict is and for what credentials?

Check to see if the browser is turned off in the services on the w2k pro's. Glen A. Johnson
