Hi, I am hoping someone can help me with this....
We have 2 network segments here all belong to the same domain.
PDC and BDCs are all in segment A, and clients on both Segment A and B, all belong to the same domain, and are authenticated by the domain controllers in Segment A.
I have browsed the Browse list using BROWSTAT STATUS command on both segment A and segment B.
On Segment A, I have queried the PDC (Master browser server), a resource server and also a workstation
The list is consistent, though the order of the backup browser servers are different -> I gather that this is because a nonbrowser node querying one of the 3 backup browser server in random -> so this changes with time. (Though the backup browsers remain the same, unless an election has happened during this time, taking time to propagate through out the network)
On Segment B, note that the master browser belongs to Segment A. I have queried a workstation (under the same domain) and got the browse list. This list appears to be different, that is, it has three different backup browse servers. As expected, the master browser server remains the same -> PDC residing in Segment A.
I have checked the "contents" of all the nodes observed (mentioned above) using BROWSTAT VIEW and I can see the entries are all the same -> of servers and workstations belonging to the same domain. This made sense to me, since it only contains the domain entries. UNLESS we have configured the Master browser to add other domains which will be made available to its "Computer Browser" service. BUT BECAUSE WE HAVE ISDN WAN LINKS to the REMOTE DOMAIN (on another network segment), we would not have their entries. this is to eliminate the ISDN from being brought up every 12 minutes when the master browser servers update one another.
HERE IS THE QUESTION:
HOW did the PDC (Master browser server for our domain) able to BROWSE the domain
I have checked the browselist on PDC to see the REMOTE domain (REMOTE)
Status for domain REMOTE on transport \Device\NetBT_El90x1
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.
IT STATES that this is not active. So THE ENTRIES ARE NOT IN THE BROWSELIST -> as seen by browsing the list
Using net view /Domain:REMOTE
I get intermittent results. I have been able to browse the list before.... but as I am trying right now, I got the following ERROR MESSAGE
X:\NTRESKIT>net view /domain:REMOTE
System error 6118 has occurred.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
THIS ALWAYS WORKED BEFORE (from the PDC), now it does not. (I have made sure that the ISDN line does not drop, so I continuously pinged it to keep the connection up, so there is no connection issue here)
TRIED browsing REMOTE domain using USer Manager for Domains, it worked. Tried again to new view the REMOTE domain, this time it worked, and showed me all the listed server names in the REMOTE domain. (UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH)
__________________________________________
On the RESOURCE server in Segment A
From this server I CAN net view \\<PDC OF REMOTE DOMAIN> both using NETBios name and IP address
BUT I can never use net view /domain:REMOTE
It gives me (consistently) the following error
C:\TEMP>net view /domain:REMOTE
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.
I can never browse the REMOTE Domain user manager using User Manager for Domains either, where as I can always view this from the PDC (Master browser).
I have checked EVENT VIEWER for all nodes, no entries were shown in any of them.
ANY IDEAS? WHERE ELSE CAN I FIND LOGS??
Can you see something I just can't see at this moment?? (I mean, a pattern to what I have mentioned...)
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
