I am supporting a fairly new Dell 8200 running W2K SP3 (now) and IE6 (now). It has 128MB RAM, 10GB hard drive with 3GB used. This is the client machine.
The server is NT4 SP4 running Small Business Server including Proxy Server & Exchange. Proxy server is set up to be the proxy server, with authentication going through it for Internet access. The server has DSL through a FlowPoint 2200.
In IE connections it is not set to use Proxy Server on any of the machines.
The problem is that several programs run very slow on one client machine, and fine on all the rest.
When you start IE it says, “looking for XYSERVER” for a long time before it finds it and then shows msn.com. Once it finds it it’s pretty fast. Also, when you click to close IE, it doesn’t close right away.
When you start Outlook, there is a 30 second pause before it open. It doesn’t close right away, when you click to close it.
WordPerfect loads pretty fast, but it’s faster on other machines.
The machine is having a problem updating the McAfee DAT files and this hasn’t been done since May.
User also reports that after a while, sound cuts out. Spinner.com hangs.
Here’s what I tried so far:
1. I tried a different port on the hub
2. I found that the IE cache was 2GB and deleted everything (using IE) and set it to 80MB
3. I looked in Task Manager and so nothing suspicious running
4. I checked the IDE driver mode and it is running DMA
5. Disk Cleanup / Scandisk found no errors
6. I ran defragmentation and it said that defrag wasn’t needed
7. I ran Trend Micro’s online virus check and it said there wasn’t a virus
8. I looked in the event logs and the only suspicious thing was, “Windows cannot update your registry file. If you have a roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Detail – access is denied (Build #2195)
9. I installed W2K SP3
10. I installed IE 6
11. I killed all of the programs running from startup like VNC, McAfee, and a few more.
12. I booted in Safe Mode with Networking, and the same problem was there.
At this point the only thing I can think of is to format the drive and start over.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
