Does the RPC patch affect performance?

Having loaded the RPC patch on a number of pc's in our network I've noticed that they're very slow accessing local apps and network docs. If the fly lead is unplugged the pc runs fine?
I've updated the antivirus and have run the Symantec removal tool - is anybody aware of a problem / bug in the Win XP RPC patch?
