Does Tape Robot have to be physically connected?

Quick question,

We have a lab environment that has a tape drive in a different rack than the new backup server is currently in. Just wondering if since the tape drive has an IP associated to it can we run backups.....SLOW backups through it or does it need to be physically connected?
