I'm trying to learn how to burn music onto CDs. Despite the fact that I've put in a new CD-R disk rated for music, my CD burning program keeps telling me there is no CD in the drive. I'm wondering if the CD drive in my PC lacks burn capability and is read-only. Is there some way I can check on this? (I'm not sure where my documentation is)

Easiest way is to look at the front of the drive. If it has just the regular compact disk logo or no logo then your out of luck.

If it had the compact disk logo with the word "rewritable" or "R" or "RW" on it then something else is wrong!

I would think that if your burning software hasn't recognised it then it's time to invest in a new drive.

Regards,

Rob

Or will have speed ratings indicating the capabilities.

It says on one side: "Compact Disk Rewritable" and on the other "DVD ROM". Is that saying, I can burn music, data and image files but can only playback, not burn DVD files?

Read only DVD. R/W CD.

Thanks. Looks like, if I want to burn DVDs I have two tasks ahead of me:

1) Find a good program (preferably freeware) that converts .avi, mpeg or other video compression formats into DVD format.
and
2) invest in an external DVD write drive.

Agree? Any suggestions?

It could be an internal DVD+-RW drive. way cheaper than the external ones.

Usually the DVD+-RW drives will come bundled with software that can do that. Comvert video to DVD format and burn it etc.... So basically you would only need to buy a drive thats fits yout needs.
