Does ID have variable or cross-ref functions?

In FrameMaker, Word, WordPerfect, variables and Cross-references (sometimes called fields) can be used to speed up the revision or writing process. Also, a link to a graphic and its reference in the text is updated if more text is added, etc.
Does InDesign have similar features? I can't seem to find them.

I don't believe it has any, but your question made me realize that it could be done fairly easily via scripting, and my mind began to race on how to do it and what could be done.

Can you provide a couple of examples of what you'd want it to do?

Oh,and it's been 8 years or so since I've written any Applescript and I no longer have a functioning Mac, so my script would be in VBScript, leaving it for someone else to translate into Applescript.
