Hi all,

I am new to cisco switch, first thing first, can any one tell me how to gain access to the catalyst 2822, because the switch was setup by someone who already left the office long ago and has no configuration info anywhere, I wondering is that necessary to change the mode to config the switch it is on production network and I don't find any reference to different mode on the switch, so I am being caution on this, especialy not knowing the current config of the switch.
and one more question, does the catalyst 2822 able to be the default gateway in the windows network with mixed tcp/ip and ipx.

TIA
Dennis

To get into the switch, you need a console cable. Cisco normally provides one with equipment when you purchase it, its a blue cable. Basically its a 'Rollover' cable. Pin 1 becomes Pin 8, 2 becomes 7, etc. you also need a DB9 to ethernet adapter, also included from Cisco. The adapter will say 'Terminal' on it. you plug the cable into the Console port on the switch, and then into the adapter. The adapter goes into your Serial port on a PC. Use Hyperterminal to connect. Settings are 9600, 8, No Parity, 2 stop bits, flow control hardware (I believe...). Once you connect, press 'Enter' a couple times and you should be in. There may be a password also.
As far as config goes, you should be able to get away with no config, and your gateway will be your router. if there is a config, you can get rid of it by typing 'write erase', and that will erase the startup config, then just reboot and it is a plain switch. Let us know if you get into it...

Thanks Doyle,

I been trying to access the switch, in the past as you described, but just not able to get in, I use the rollover cable and DB9 from a pix firewall, with the same setting for the port, I am able to get to the pix firewall, but not the switch, not even able to connect, wondering different 'mode' will do the trick

Thanks
Dennis

try this: connect the cable, and reboot the switch. you should see some stuff come onto the screen. that will tell you if you are talking to the switch. if you get garble, its a setting problem. If you get nothing, you are not even talking to the switch, which is a problem. sounds like you have the right idea down to connect though. I am not too familiar with PIX stuff, so I dont know if the settings are any different, but I wouldnt think so.
