Does anyone know of a reliable program that records document access?

e.g. when *.doc, *.xls were opened.

Are you looking at this from a server-side or a client-side point of view? A little history (like why you would like to this) would be appreciated.

I would like to install it on a Windows XP PC, hence the post here. I would like to monitor which documents are opened on the XP PC. I am not interested in remotely monitoring a PC. All monitoring will be local.

Would it need to be more comprehensive than XP's Recent Documents logs:

That's a great link, thanks very much for the information.

It is to assist a member of staff who has a genuine memory problem. They need to be able to see the files they have opened so that they can fill out a timesheet (all our files are named according to project). At present, filling out a timesheet is a stressful exercise for them because they have huge gaps in the week and they cannot remember what they were doing.

To be honest I had forgotten about the ..\recent folder - that should suffice.

Thanks for the star...and the explanation. I wasn't sure if this was to "spy" on a user, you cleared that one up.

FYI ActualDoc is much more powerful and holds more than the last 15 documents, and in your case might be a better option. It logs all documents by date and that might be helpful in your case.
