Hi

How do you know that your DNS is configured correctly using the active directory integration. What are some of the things I should be looking for?

Hi,

Errors in the eventlog are a good sign. Problems logging on are another.

Basically DNS should be set up with clients set to the local DNS server. The windows 2000 server should be then forwarding request to the ISPs server.

What is your setup?

Performing a NSLOOKUP on the clients and server is also a good thing to check. Along with DCDIAG.

Also go to NetIQ.com they have a free Adcheck software that’s pretty good. Remember that AD lives and thrives off of DNS! Like AshleyPride suggested NSLOOKUP, also try Netdiag /? For commands

Well the reason i asked is because i have many erros in my event log. the netlogon error. at present i had the server tcp/ip properties for the server pointing to the ISP which it should not be based on what I found on the net. It should be the internal dns and that should point to the isp dns.

now here is the ting, how do you get the clients set to that dns. i have at present the clients to obtain auto. should that be changed?

I am not to ofay with the dns. when i click the forward lookup Zone what should i see in there. i have it set to active directory integration. where can i go to see how the information is updated between the systems. that is server and other machines on the network

First thing is to resolve the errors in the event viewer. Get the error ID number and go to the web and see what the error is and the resolution the fix,

If you don’t have TechNet see about getting it, my boss is a big Novell guy, and it took him over a year to get TechNet, after we were complaining a lot, as soon as he did I was able to solve a lot of our problems. I’m assuming that the clients are getting the DNS automatically by DHCP??? We are currently moving toward that way and have about ¼ of users on DHCP, and have DNS auto config. That way. Works great. I have our clients DNS settings going to our internal DNS 192.168.1.14 and then the second DNS number going to our external ISP, I was told that this is for external web lookups. If you don’t use DHCP to Auto config. Then manually set it at each computer, I haven’t had time to research a quicker way; Domain Group policy is great but will not help in this case.

If you have the server TCP/IP properties set to the ISPs DNS server you will get a LOT of errors in the event viewer.

I assume your using DHCP ? You need to set the clients to use the DNS of your server in DHCP.

Then in DNS you need to right click on your server name, select properties and enter the IP address of your ISPs DNS in there. IF the forwarders checkbox is grayed out you need to go into the FLZ and delete the root (.) record.

At this point, I would clear out all the event logs and reboot. Then log in the event log you should be seeing a lot less problems!
