I have setup my DNS server on win 2k and it all seems to working fine. I do notice something a little peculiar about the nslookup command when it is run on the client. I get the following message.

C:\>nslookup 192.168.1.15 192.168.1.86
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.86: Non-existant Domain
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.86

*** UnKnown can't find 192.168.1.15: Non-existent domain

Now 192.168.1.86 is my DNS Server and .15 is another server on my network. Any ideas why this would do this and how do i fix it? Also if I am only going to run DNS internally do i need to have a MX record on my DNS server or should i just keep my email server pointed to my ISP's DNS and then have the cleints all point to my inrenal DNS. Thnaks for your help.

have you set in the forward lookup zones, in the domain you want the A register for the server?

another thing, you must set up also the reverse lookup zones.

In my forward lookup zones here is what i have ..
Name Type Data
same as parent folder Start of authority servernameemail
same as parent folder wins lookup ipforwinsserv
same as parent folder name server FQDN for DNSserv
same as parent folder name server netbios of DNServ
After that the various server names in my intranet and the type is host.

In my Reverse zone I have the same first line then after that is the WINS-R record and then a pointer to my DNS server.

well you must have something like this:

in the FWZ
192.168.1.86 A dns.somedomain.com

Hi bud,

In the reverse lookup zone all that should be required to fix that annoying little error is:

A Start of Authority record
A Name Server record
A Pointer record

Those three and you should be set. Sounds like you have either two or all of them already?

Hope this helps.

a DNS server have diferent kind of records for each question you can do to it.

You must have the SOA record cause every computer must know who can answer with authority to some question
You must have several A records to translate from internet addresses to IP addresses (one for each server you have).
You must have several PTR records to translate from IP addresses to internet addresses.
You must have MX records to say witch are the computers that recieves your mails
The CNAME are alias to services. Suppose you want to have more than one web site in the same server. You record on general A record and then CNAMES for all the web sites you have there.
And some records more.

To answer finelly, the DNS server must have the SOA record, the A record and the PTR Record.
The SOA and the A record must be in FWZ and the SOA and PTR record must be in the RVZ.

then, to check your server do something like this:
nslookup
server the_server_name
set q=SOA
yourdomain.com

and see if the answers are fine.

Domain name scic.com
IP address 192.168.1.86
