Hi

I have set up a mail server and it is working great however:

I have set up a pop3 account on my bosses pc but I have to use an ip address for the incoming and outgoing mail server address. I had requested our hosting provider to set up a A record to point to the same ip address as used above. I have checked on the net and the ip address is resolving to the address ... but when I put this information in the incoming / outgoing mail settings the account is unable to connect.

The A record is email.mydomain.com -> to my IP address.

Can anyone please tell me, have I done right thing in requesting a A record? or should it be something else. Please any help in this matter would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance

For starters, more info is required. Are these systems (pop server, smtp server, & boss's client computer) all on an internal network or are they somewhere on the internet?

The servers are all on the internal network. My boss has a home pc and I plan to let him connect up using pop.

Traditionally, MX records indicated mail servers, but it shouldn't be necessary for the host provider to set up an MX record pointing to your server. The A record should be sufficient and if you can ping otherwise access the server via the name, then this portion is working.

The local email server, however, may require an MX record pointing to the server. This would be on the local DNS for your network.
