When I set workstations prefered dns to the DC's Ip address, they cant access the internet.

To eneble them to access the internet, I have to set it to the routers IP, but if I do that, active directory doesnt work properly on the workstations.

How do I set DNS up so that internet is accessible when set?

If I havent explained myself properly please tell me.

Thanks

It says I can't configure forwarders because it is a root server...

my computers were doing this. i just added the ip of the router to the dns list on each client.

That config is known to cause all sorts of issues with XP/2k clients if you use active directory policies and i would recommend against it.

Easiest way to configure a class C Client Server network:

PC Config
192.168.1.x IP
255.255.255.0 subnet
192.168.1.1 router IP address

DNS
192.168.1.x SERVER IP address
4.2.2.1 ISP Primary DNS address or Router IP

MS support will tell you not to configure your secondary DNS to point to your ISP almost under any circumstances.

You can get away with it on small setups 'sometimes' but you can find yourself experiencing problems with this setup.

Thanks very much everyone,

I deleted the root dns from the DNS mmc, then I was able to configure a forwarder.
