Good Morning,

We are running Active Directory and DHCP with Windows 2000 and NT systems under it. I am finding some quirky DNS issues. For instance, this morning I tried to ping a box that was most certainly up, when I pinged the box it came back with a different address than the box was. I looked in the DHCP manager and it was correct there, and when I looked into the DNS manager, the box did not even show up. It almost seems possibly that my pc is caching something for a certain period? Also, I do not have any aging or scavaging properties set...should I? And when I look into the DNS manager the PC's all seem to have a TTL of 20 min and it does not change...why is that?

Any help would be appreciated!

Does more than one address show in DNS on your DNS server for that computer?
Are you using WINS too?

If you ping the box do you get two different addresses, alternately every other time you ping? (this would imply two DNS records for the same host)

Setting Scavening stale records could help, but only if your problem is caused by stale records.

Also, is your DHCP server set to properly update DNS when it hands out addresses? (but not if the client is self registering)

Also, make sure it's not just a dnscache issue on your local system. Clear your local DNS and NetBios cache and see if you still see the same issue.

I hope this helps,
Dana
