I recently purchased a new CPU to Setup a Windows 2000 Server for my home. A friend (while I was out of town) installed the server software. I have setup my IP on server as 10.10.1.1, Submask as 255.255.255.0, GateWay as 192.161.1.1, and my Primary DNS as 10.10.1.1. When I view the eventlog, I get the above error message with the following additional information. "This DNS server is configed to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it."

I'm new to Win2K Server. What is it talking about? Is there a tool that I can use to fix the problem or is this something I need to do manually? What directory is it talking about.

I appreciate your time and assistance.

Thanks.

try adding a different DNS server to the list and make it the primary one.

I would first go to the event viewer in the administrator tools and then go to microsoft knowledge base to find more information about the error.

Click Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->DNS
Right-click on your DNS-server, then click Properties
Click Advanced
In "Load zone data on startup" select from file"

Thanks Trimelater and Odissey.

From what I viewed in KBase, it all was at a high level. At least it seamed high level to me.

I attempted to change to "From File", but I receive the following message. "Boot Method cannot be set. The boot from file option cannot be selected because there are one or more Active directory integrated zones." Shouldn't I have just one zone? If so, how can I remove the extra zone?

Thanks

Thanks Odissey,

I found that I needed to update another parameter on another property page from "Active Directory and Registry" to "from file". Once updated, I was able to successfully make your recommended change.

Once again, thanks.
