i have an internet domain parkes a yahoo domains. i wanted to figure out how to set up email accounts on that domain and have them forward to some other email account. I know i can use the gui yahoo has built to do this, but i am trying to learn something here. Its my understanding i can do this in the following way. Im having trouble getting it to work though, so please help me figure out what im doing wrong.

I set up an MX record on yahoo domains that sends all email to my domain. i have a dns server on the machine that the domain points to that has an MR record that forwards user@domain.com to some other email address like user.yahoo.com

I cant get this to work, please help.

Im really confused by what you are trying to do.

Where do you want your mail delivered first? Yahoo or your server?

Your MX record has an IP that resolves to the dns name of your mailserver. Where does your MX record sit?

In terms of forwarding mail, you can look at no-ip.com they can host your MX record and then you can connect to them using a pop account and get your mail.

Please explain in more detail what you are trying to accomplish.

basically i want to learn whats going on behind the scenes in dns in order to set up email accounts on my domain that forward to some other account for instance either at hotmail or yahoo mail.

my domain is parked at yahoo domains. They offer unlimited email account forwarding for addresses at my domain. I want to learn how to do this on my own.

so for instance i believe my dns A records reside on yahoo name servers. The way i thought i could do this was to put an mx record on yahoo nameservers that sent all mail at my domain to my domain. from there i could have the dns server re-route particular email accounts to different specific email accounts. Sort of like setting up an alias lookup table.

so what i have done is put the following MX record at yahoo domains: MX 10 mydomain.com

then i have an MR record on my dns server which is set up for the zone "mydomain.com" that sends email from the address at my domain to some other adress:
user.mydomain.com MR user.yahoo.com

I hope this helps clear things up. I guess the hard part here is most people dont want to jack with this kind of stuff since there are available all sorts of gui email forwarding tools. but i ma trying to get my feet wet into some dns.

Thanks

If you want to learn something nifty, try getting an account for websites like hostway.com. $20 a month, you can not only host sites, but they give you 10 free pop3 accounts, and you can use aliases. I connect to the net using a guy here in town who's been in business for years and it costs me $12 per month unlimited access and has 2 servers in his basement. Everyone here I know who knows pc's use him. I use the same phone number for all my pc's, set up my own website using a $50 program. Set up e-mail for my wife, daughter and myself, and I can check the mail from there web-site so I don't have to worry about viruses. Forget MSN or AOL if you want to learn. (I've even put my web-sites dns info in my hosts file, so I connect faster for e-mail and such.) Glen A. Johnson
