DNS Settings slowing down Exchange name resolution

I was having speed issues when accessing HTTPS websites. I think that a problem with our Proxy Server was causing the problem with the internet. The only way for me to bypass the proxy server was to enter our dns ip's into tcp/ip. (We were not using dns #'s, only hostname and domain name.) When I added DNS numbers to tcp/ip settings, it solved the internet problem, but it slows down our Exchange name resolution hugely. To fix the internet issue, besides entering #'s into dns, I had to change the default gateway from the router, to the firewall. Otherwise, I can't access the internet. Is this part of the problem? Also, it works fine with Win98, the problem only happens on NT machines. Any ideas?
