DNS settings for internal Applicane 1

Hi all: I have an internal appliance that stores old emails. All the users can get to it via IE and the IP address.
I have several users who can not seem to remember the IP address. How do I set up DNS to let them use a simple name?

Server SBS 2003 R2
Desktops XP Pro SP3

Windows Server 2003 has DNS capability. Installing it should amount to adding a component to the installation.

It looks like the configuration uses a wizard. Given your level of comfort,this may make things easier (or drive you nuts).

Give the document a once over. It seems complete, but rather terse and if any parts or the terminology of it don't make sense to you, post back and we will try to elaborate.

Sorry I wasn't clear. DNS is set up and running (but looks a little weird). The Appliance is an email archive system, and is built on Linux (I think) so it does not register with Microsofts DNS. I have the IP address 192.16.10.100 and entering that in to a Web Browser will allow me to access the contents. I would like the users to be able to just enter Archive or

http://www.Archive.local

and be take to the Appliance.
How do I create that kind of setup in DNS.
I will address the weirdness in a seperate question.

Create a new forward lookup zone with name archive.local. Then create 2 new host records in that zone, one for archive.local (leave the name blank so it uses the parent domain name) and one for

http://www.archive.local

(only enter www) and set the IP to the one for the appliance. That way if someone enters archive.local or

http://www.archive.local,

they will get to the appliance.

if you have an existing dns server in your network why not just create an a record that points to the archive machine.after you create the A record on the dns server configure the Linux box with the ip address of the dns server
