I am running Windows Server 2003 EE as a DNS server. I have a static IP of 10.101.72.20. Why does it seem to work when I set my Primary DNS Server to 127.0.0.1 but not when I set it to 10.101.72.20. They're the same thing...why does one work and the other not.

AND

WINS seems to be the opposite...if I set WINS to 127.0.0.1 it seems to break...but if I set it to 10.101.72.20 everything works fine. Can somebody PLEAZ explain this?

Why are you running WINS? DNS should be pointing to itself.

Well, yes, DNS should be pointing to itself, but the point above is that either way DNS is pointing to itself...but it seemed unable to resolve when I used the machine's actual IP instead of loopback.

No, the server does not have an active network connection. Why would that make a difference?

I am running WINS because WINS is required for various Windows components, for instance, for various features of Exchange (up to and including Exchange 2003).

DNS: it needs a valid IP address that works.
an active network connection is an essential part of this...

what is the result of IPconfig on the server?

you cant use the loopback address for dns... even if it will accept it, it wont work correctly.

both dns & wins settings should be pointing to the actual IP address, dont forget 127.0.0.1 is not a valid IP address it is the loopback device address to test the TCP/IP stack
