I have a Domain Controller setup on a new domain (domain.local), but when I try to add an additional domain controller, I get an error saying that it can't locate a domain controller for the domain.local domain. It goes on to mention to make sure DNS settings are correct.

I'm pretty new to all this, and didn't modify any DNS settings from the defaults when I installed Active Directory on the first server. Can anyone tell me what I'll need to do/change in order to make the other server work as an additional domain controller?

Thanks!

On the server you are adding make sure that the local TCP/IP settings point to the local DNS server.

For example,

Orignal DC/DNS server = 10.10.10.1

The new servers DNS entry must point to = 10.10.10.1

That's how I currently have it set. Unfortunately, still getting the same error.

MAke sure that DNS service is running on the original server... Also go into the DNS console and make sure that you see your Forward lookup zone (called domain.local)

Also make sure that the original DC is pointing to itself for DNS (it should not be pointing to the ISP DNS servers in its local TCP/IP properties).

i.e.

Orignal DC/DNS server IP= 10.10.10.1

Original DC/DNS server must have TCP/IP DNS entry pointing to = 10.10.10.1 (No other IP's should be listed)

Problem solved! Some of the required setting for DNS were missing. I ran the netdiag /fix thing, and it seems to be installing now! Thanks for the suggestions!
