My Windows 2000 DNS server (also acts as the DC) is set to forward to my ISP’s DNS servers. My client PC’s point to my Win2K DNS server for name resolution and can access the internet. One client PC uses outlook to access an external mail server hosted by the company that the domain name was purchased from. The problem is accessing an external mail server. Outlook is setup point to smtp.domainname.com & pop3.domainname.com. If the client PC’s DNS settings point to the external ISP’s DNS servers the outlook mail connection works fine. If the PC’s DNS settings point to the internal DNS server outlook cannot connect to the external mail server but can still access the internet.
Any advice would be appreciated on how to resolve this problem.

get the ip of both pop and smtp, put them into the hosts file on the server.

Is this the only client using Outook? Are the others sending and recieving E-mail? If he is the only one, or all are experiencing this problem, you could add an MX record to your DNS to point to the IP of the external mail server. If you don't know the IP, ping the name and it will return the IP.
To add an MX record, open the DNS snap-in, expand your server and the forward lookup. Right-click your server and choose Add a new Mail Exchanger....
