I'm confused here . . .

I have a win2k AD network, internal IP addresses are 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.255 (not all used, of course).

I have a local server called 'main.mydomain.com', with IP address 10.0.0.1

On the outside (via MS ISA 2004 firewall), our ISP runs a mailserver for us. It is called 'mail.mydomain.com', and has a fixed IP address on the net.

Note - internal = main, external = mail

When I ping 'mail.mydomain.com' from inside my network, which should resolve to the external mailserver, it returns the IP address for 'main.mydomain.com'.

I guess the fact there names are similar might be a coincidence, but anyway it's wrong, and I am having trouble getting email (actually, I can't get it at all . . .).

Any idea what might be going on?

Thanks.

Have you checked the DNS on your server to make sure you haven't entered a record for mail.mydomain.com? Also, flush the cache on the server as well as locally, then try again.

Thanks.

Yes, the secondary DNS server had a rogue entry - deleted that, flushed it and it works.

(actually, looks like as I suspected the mailserver at the ISP is down, but at least it's looking in the right place)

Have a star!
