I am trying to install DNS Intergrated with AD namespacing over a VPN. I have a zone test.gov with a domain test1 so
test1.test.gov. I want the VPN site to host its own primary DNS server test2.test1.test.gov or test2.test.gov. Im not sure how to go. Do I need to delegate a new zone or create a secondary zone? Or should I run DCpromo on the new server and try to have DNS configured automatically.

Thanks to all responses, much appreciated.

Why would you want to connect to the Domain Controller over a VPN just to configure it?

I think I maybe misunderstanding you.

Is this what you have?
1)DNS Server
2)VPN Server
and you want the vpn to host it's own dns?
I'd dcpromo so you have a backup server for redundancy. Good luck. (More is always better than less.)

Just to clarify...

You have a VPN client that u wish to host a dns server?

Any particular reason? I guess u want to eliminate WAN traffic for queries etc?

A new zone would invole a new authorative area whereas a secondary server would just be a copy of the primary already created for Test1.

In this instance, in my opinion a secondary zone would just increase traffic as it would be polling the test1 server via ixrf (incremental transfers) for info.

I would suggest (if u really need to!!!) A new Primary zone with the address of test1 as a forwarder if unresolved.
