We are running DNS for our building on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller. It works great most of the time, but about 1x a week, it no longer resolves external addresses (yahoo.com) but it does a dandy job on internal ones.

Any ideas, anything you want me to post?

Firstly you should be able to start and stop the DNS service, instead of rebooting the server.
Run DcDiage.exe and Netdiag.exe in verbose mode to see if you have errors other then in the Event logs.

Suggest you get Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows 2003 book, thorough DNS explaination.

kopar,

You can also just clear the cache on the DNS server instead of rebooting.

I do not beleive so. I'm almost positive we are using the root-hint servers.

Also, our DNS services don't seem to cache external requests. I'd like to impliment that if I can.

kopar,

In the DNS console select 'View' and then 'Advanced' to see the cache.

Sweet. I've been looking for that =) Good to know i'm not spamming the roothint servers
