Forgive me all. I am not familiar with BIND DNS. I have a question regarding setting up of a DNS entry. I have a service that requires a DNS entry of "zenwsimport". The workstations do not look for anything more than that, example: zenwsimport.domain.org. Is there a way to create a DNS entry with the just the "zenwsimport" and nothing else? Are there rules or security issues I am not aware of?

I would really appreciate any input on this. Thanks much!

No, a DNS entry must be fully qualified and so it would have to be registered in DNS as zenwsimport.domain.com.

However, this isn't such a problem if you set your clients up correctly. For example, I run a DNS server on our LAN that has a domain (eg iproute.co.uk). I also need to connect to a lot of external devices (mostly firewalls)and I want to be able to reference them by a single name so that I don't have to remember the IP addresses. So I have in my zone file on my internal DNS server a list of all the remote hosts that I connect to in zone file for my domain.

In my DNS setting on my laptop I make sure that I have the option "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" selected and so if I try to connect to say mailsrv, the domain will be appended by the system and then the whole fully qualified name will be resolved by my DNS server. So I can now just put an A record in my internal zone file for every device that I want to connect to and reference all devices by a single name.

Chris.
