I'm not very experienced with this so hopefully someone can shed some light on the subject for me...

I've set up a domain (mydomain.com) on Win 2k3, now I would like to start receiving emails, however I also setup a linux box that I want to used for spam filtering. So when I send an email to user@mydomain.com, I want it to first go to my linux spam filter and then be handed to my Win2k3 server (were my xmail client is handling the mail).

Currently I have it working were it is going directly to my Win2k3 server. Can someone explain to me how I should have my host, alias, and mx records set up to do the above?

I'm using godaddy.com's Total DNS to control DNS propogation. Also my linux box is named filter.mydomain.com". I'm also running a PIX firewall, in case you need to know that.

Thanks in advance,

J

you'd set your MX record to be filter.
Then you would tell your linux box to send all mail for domain.com to the exchange host.

I have mine set up with Postfix. The forward after scanning is going to depend on what MTA you have...

Right, that is what I want to do, but exactly how do I do that? What should the MX record be set to? It has a place for "hostname" and "goes to", but I don't know what those should be.

First make sure your linux box will forward filtered mail for your domain only (test without dns to ensure not using mx record )( not accept others )to your 2k3, then set your mx to the linux box first and your 2k3 second. after add firewall rule to not allow outside port 25 to 2k3, then if your linux is down, you can still receive non-filtered email with a firewall rule change.

When in doubt,,, Power out...
