We use ISA 2K and have exchange 2K3 running on an internal server. I currently send mail via a smart-host but need to change to sending via dns. Trouble is, none of our internal computers/servers can resolve external dns queries. We can all ping ip addresses externally just fine, but not with a dns ping. The ISA can ping both ip and dns queries successfully.

We have two internal W2K dns servers which deal with internal queries. What am I missing to get workstations and servers to received successful dns queries from outside our network?

It sounds like you need to go into your DNS Servers, choose one, right click and choose properties and set up Forwarders. Fowarders are Public DNS Servers that when you try to hit a domain other than yours, your DNS Server requests information from the Public DNS Servers.

Thank you for your help, but I'm not too sure exactly how to do this. My external folder under Forwarders points to the other internal dns server and my isa server which can resolve external queries. I guess that's not enough.

The provider for your Internet access probably has public DNS servers. Contact them and get some addresses and add those addresses into the forwarders area.

Good luck!

Dan

Thanks. I already had the dns addresses but I was unable to add them to the Forwarder list because I couldn't put a tick in the box in the Forwarders tab. However, I've managed to solve that now and the address pinging appears to work but Exchange will still not send via DNS. I have a colleague coming over tomorrow to look into it further.
