Our server (RedHat Linux 7.2) went down yesterday, and I've been trying to get it back up and running. Right now, Samba is driving me bonkers. I can ping the server via IP address, but not by name. According to the troubleshooting guide ( this is probably due to a DNS issue, and it suggests the following:

1. The DNS configuration on the server (/etc/resolv.conf) is broken.

2. The computer name does not contain an entry in the DNS zone.

3. The DNS server is currently unavailable.

I've confirmed that the DNS configuration on the server is correct (ruling out #1), and that the DNS server is available/pingable (ruling out #3). I have no idea how to check for #2.

Other information:

** The computer does not show up in Network Neighborhood.

** "net view \\SERVER_NAME" and "net view \\XXX.YYY.ZZZ.100" both yield "Error 53".

** The smb.conf file was saved from the previous installation, where it did work.

Update: apparently the problem was actually with ipchains. Once I took that down, I was able to access everything. Of course, I'm now running naked here. How do I poke a hole so I can use Samba with ipchains in place?
