Hey all

When connected to isa via vpn i can resolve all host names fine except a few servers that are published externally with the same host name.

We have an internal dns server which has the proper hostnames and ip's. Our isp hosts our external dns which has the proper hostnames with the external ips. Is this not a split dns?

Any idea why when connected via vpn and I try to ping our mail server or web server I am pinging the external ip?

I assume that you've configured dial-up and vpn setting on your IE to use your isa as your proxy so make sure that "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" is checked and in advanced setting enter *.mydomain.* in exception box.

this is because your pc is unsure where to send its requests ,
one way of over comming this is

if your server at the vpn site / work has a hostname of : server1

and you try to rdp to server1 your request might time out

but if you enter server1@abc.co.uk - the full qualified domain name , this is because its able to identify the loccation of your remote location.

the other way to save you saving keep typing the full dns name is to do the following

goto your vpn connection in network connections , and select the vpn connection , right click and select properties, select networking , with tcp/ip selected click properties , then select the advanced button , select dns tab , append these dns , in there add your full vpn site dns abc.co.uk it will then append this to the end of you rdp server1 connection .
