Hi I have set up a DNS server for our Intranet.
However the domain name is the same as our actual web site e.g. test.com.
I've added an A RECORD as the intranet has additional text e.g intranet.test.com

Problem is whenever someone intrenally tries to access our website they cannot find it.
I thought of adding anothre A RECORD to say go here but the web site is housed externally.

Hopes this makes sense to someone and would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in advance

Ian Taylor

Adding an A record would be the easiest solution. As long as your hosting provider doesn't change the IP address for your external site, you probably won't have any issues.

Thanks JBUD.

I've been trying to find the IP address but think its on a shared system so probably doesn't have a dedicated IP. Is there another RECORD type I can use, I have a link that goes direct to the site without using the domain. Can I use that??

You should be able to use that. You may want to verify how their virtual hosting is set up (ie, is it IP-based or name-based?).

The other solution to this would be to delegate, on your internal server, the zone to the hosting providers' DNS servers.

excellent thanks JBUD, I got it to work. I tried using the IP address that showed up in the firewall and it works fine.

Thanks again
