I keep getting this in the event viewer, and I have even stopped the DNS service;

"Deregistration of the DNS record 'gc._msdcs.protectors.com. 600 IN A 172.169.215.62' failed with the following error:
DNS operation refused. "
and
'Deregistration of the DNS record 'protectors.com. 600 IN A 172.142.239.252' failed with the following error:
DNS operation refused. "

I have looked it up on the MS site, it says the the "The first domain controller in a child domain may not be able to register SRV records on the DNS server in the parent domain. When this problem occurs, the System event log may contain any of the following error messages: "
however this is the root domain of a new forest I am trying to start. any help would be appreciated.

Could this be because I am behind a router connected to a ISP?

I am behind a router and firewall that has a Frame-relay to our ISP and we do not have this error. What i did have to do to get things working correctly is delete the "." in the forward lookup zones so that your machine will be the root server. Then under the properties or the server set up a forwarder to your DNS server of the ISP. This will allow your private DNS server to forward unresolved request to the ISP's server. This fixed a lot of errors that were occuring. Thanks

DNS problems. I'm no pro, but wonder, can you get on the interenet ok? Try nslookup, with ls -t domain name or route print and look for anything strange. Also, take the event id number and do a google search. Easier way to find info on there than MS. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
