I'm only asking this because I've never done it before.. :)

Is clearing the DNS Cache under the DNS snap-in ok? Is it just like clearing out the temp internet files or what? The cache on my DNS looks to be HUGE! There's gotta be over ten-thousand cached sites in there..

I'm just scared that if I use the "Clear Cache" option, all hells gonna break loose in my domain..

safe? un-safe?

DNS cache is used to connect to root DNS servers on the NET as well as resolving names that are outside the domain where you are.

Generally, these records are helpful unless they use an unpractical amount of space. Older records are pruned to limit the amount of space used by the cached records. If space is not a major concern, leave things as they are.

Removing these cached records will slightly slow down the name resolution process as the Name Server (NS) will have to go through other Name Servers to resolve a record that does not figure in its cache.

A drastic way of doing things is deleting a large number of them or all of them and letting your NS rebuild a fresh bank of cached records. At the speed things move on the web, this might be a good thing.

You now all you need to take an informed decision. Feel free to ask some more.

Take care,

Simon
