Hello and Thank you for the help

My question is do my WIN2K DNS cache server have to be part of the domain before it start caching? When I configure it pull from the primary DNS server i would not let me.

It doesn't have to be part of the domain, but what are you trying to pull from the Primary? You can't transfer cache zones...

Good question. Need a little more info. Glen A. Johnson

What I'm trying to do is cache the dns server
the process i use is
1. right click on the DNS
2. connect to computer
3. then i put the my primary dns server.

after i did all of the following it gave me an error
Reading: Access was denined..

I'm confused (what a surprise...).
What do you want to do, create a caching-only DNS server?
Or just view the cache on the DNS server? Or something else?

uninstall DNS, then reinstall it, and don't add any forward lookup zones. In DNS manager, make sure you're in Advanced View. If you have a root zone (".") , delete it. If you want to use your ISP's DNS servers as Forwarders, add them into the config now, otherwise, just use the internet Root Servers in Root Hints. Restart the DNS service.
