Dmax in vba

how do i include a dmax function in vba and pass it to a variable, ive tried this and io get an error:-

External name not defined

the line is :-

FI = DMax([table1], [FileIndex], [table1]) + 1

"My God! It's full of stars...
 
I use the code below for adding a membership No it looks like you have the table in twice
MembershipNo = DMax("[MembershipNo]", "tblperson") + 1
