DMax Function as a control

I am trying to get a max value from a query and am using the following, any ideas why it is wrong

=DMax("MemberID","qryNameDOBMAATs1")

What isn't working? Does it raise an error? Display nothing in the control? Wrong data in the control? Some more detail may be helpful...
