i want to share my broadband connection to 3 comps. Im using a dsl modem (aztech 305eu) to connect to the net. I use a static ip address. I bought a ethernet broadband router(dlink 704p rev c2) My problem is that when i connect the router to my dsl modem i cant establish a connection. I know my router works coz i tried it in my office network. How can i connect to the net?

on the router there is a wan port to connect to a wide area network or (internet)and an uplink port to connect it to a switch. You must connect the dsl modem to the router through the wan port. then uplink the rest of the computers to the switch ports if the model of router has an onboard switch. if that is not the problem then you can try updating or reloading the ios which should be provided on d-links website.

After you connect your DSL modem to the WAN port and your PC to one of the LAN ports you will need to configure the router.

Start your web browser and type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. That should open up the setup utility.

Follow the instructions. Eventually you will see a choice of connection types. For DSL, this should be PPPOE (but since you have a staic address, it may be your static IP). I am guessing it is PPPOE anyway (The static IP address your ISP gave you is for the connection between them and the modem, not the connection between the modem and router).

If you choose to try PPPOE, you will be prompted to enter your DSL account username and password. Depending on your ISP... username may be username@yourisp.com, or it may simply be username.

You will need to configure each PC to obtain an IP address automatically from the router, and need to reboot the PC after making changes.

Just to elaborate a bit more on what Frank suggested...

After typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, you will get prompted for a username and password. By default, the username is admin and the password field you leave blank.

Also, you will need to check with your ISP on whether they use PPPoE or PPPoA. Then you can select that option for connection types. Even if you have a static IP, you will need to select one of those. There is also a separate selection for IP address. You should have the choice for dynamic or static, which you can fill in as well.

The only other problem that you might encounter is the DSL modem. Some are setup to use NAT (in other words, they have a built-in router). While you have your ISP on the line, ask them to make sure that NAT (Network Address Translation) is disabled on the modem if it has it.

Note: Some routers do not support PPPoA.
