I have downloaded the DivX codec, but when I go to export my movie in Premiere, I cant find it in the list of codecs.
Have I got it in the wrong place, where should I open it to?
Thanks for any help.

I might be mistaken, but I believe that's a pirate codec, a ripped off version of an earlier Microsoft MPG codec (and that better codecs are available). You might be able to import clips that are compressed via DivX, but I'm not sure you can export 'em or easily manipulate 'em.

But then, I've been proven wrong before. I only hope it builds character...

No, divx is now its own official CODEC. They dont even use MS's mpeg4 engine anymore. Its their own.
However. to encode to Divx, you have to have DIVX Pro ( ) or accept their "spyware" enabled version in order to author DIVX files.

For me, its not worth the spyware to install the damn codec anymore. Look for the "hacked" versions (divx 4 or below) on the net since they dont include spyware.

If you disable the spyware program ( gator ) via adaware or something similar, you can't render using Divx codec (the programm will ask that you reinstall gator to use the DIVX encoding ).

has tutorials on using an encoding to Divx ( pre- 5.0 as well as the new version). Just dont bother with anything on divx's site htat is if you want spyware invading your computer.

thanks very much for your help, both of you - I have adaware installed I will have a look for a another version of DivX.

Also I have a video clip that will only play in DivX player - it won't import into premiere any ideas how I can do this? Thanks again

WizyWyg,

Wow -- thanks for those two key pieces of info! I'd heard gator was a chunk of spyware, but not that it was hooked at the hip with divx.

Well, seeing as how I've seen good codecs out there (such as Ligo's) for pretty cheap, I'm not going to install anything junky.

Download the freeware VirtualDub (or VirtuaDub) and you can render any DIVX video clip to any other codec without problems. has tutorials.
