I think this question has been addressed before but I can't immediately find it by searching the forum.

I've written an application that I need to distribute it in a widely-recognised wrapper such as InstallShield or Wise, but both these applications seem to be the thick end of $500 and I can't believe that people who write small utilities for free distribution all fork out $500 just to make their utilities installable.

I've tried the VB6 P&D wizard but it creates a setup which might have looked good in Windows95 but doesn't really cut it in Windows 7.

How do you guys go about creating an installable application? Is there a cheap or free option?

Strongm I've seen a number of references to the Visual Studio installer on other forums but I can't seem to actually find it anywhere; even the archive link doesn't seem to go anywhere. It's a shame because it sounds like a good Microsoft replacement for the P&D wizard (although having not seen it I can't say for sure!).

It does. I checked it just before posting. And I've just checked it again. It does, however, often take some time to retrieve the relevant page
