Playing music CDs results in very distorted sound with crackles and pops as well.

System is Toshiba Satellite, 192 MB RAM, 450MHz Celeron (maybe the old CPU is the problem?), TEAC CD-ROM (I think 10X), although there's the same problem if I try to play the CDs from an eternal (CD 52X) HP DVD-RW. Am using new CL Audigy 2NX external soundcard (64-bit) and Cambridge Soundworks amplified speakers.

If I play CDs using the onboard sound, they play fine. Sound files on the hard drive play fine through the CL Audigy.

So it's something about the Audigy/CD source combination that's doing it, but I can't figure out what. I have updated the Audigy drivers and the firmware, but makes no difference.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tony.
