Hi,

I've been asked to find a way of displaying messages at the CTRL ALT DEL screen for Windows 2000 workstations

The reasoning behind this is to allow users to know when software patches have been successfully installed on the workstation we need some way of displaying a message saying

All patches installed, you may now login or something similar!

I'll admit to being completely stuck on this one and they need to know if it's possible asap so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gareth

I don't know any way of doing this but you could install a small client program on each machine as a service (not recommended by MicroSoft). This client program connects to the server and checks for the latest message and displays on top of the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen possibly??

Have never tried so can't say if it will work, but you can get VB6 apps to run as a service quite well.

I have had another though about this and in Windows XP there is a Option in Local Policies > Security Options that allows you to set a message that is displayed to users that are logging in.

The two lines are

Interactive Logon:Message Text for Users attempting to logon
Interactive Logon:Message Title for Users attempting to logon

The above is stored in the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

the two keys are:

legalnoticetext
legalnoticecaption

If the network is setup as a domain and not workgroup then if the setting is changed on the server the message should be pushed through to all machines connected.

However I do not have any win 2000 machines to test it on.

Hope this helps.
