When the on board Intel video has settings changed to higher than 800x600 resolution, the display turns literally sideways.

I am researching the drivers to upgrade them if possible, but I have never seen it turn sideways like that.
Anyone run into this before?
System is fine other than that....tests ok with software diag.

How about another monitor? Is it torn, or stable?

Hi Ed,

Display is stable, very odd.
The monitor is new, and the system is also.
I havent done any troubleshooting yet, just saw it on a run through to drop off an order.

Mouse even works....although sluggish. and it is legible.

Any ideas? I will try out another monitor on it, but everything else they have in that place is a lot older than this one.

Hello Kimber,
Are you using a flat screen monitor that will physically rotate from landscape to portrait?

How literal sideways? Full 90 degrees? If so it will have to be in the addressing of the ram associated with the video chip.
If it is something like 45 degrees, then you have a sync problem that the monitor can't handle.

Mainegeek no..

Ed it is literally 90 degree rotation to the left as you face the screen.
Looks like I am in for a mainboard change....havent done any troubleshooting yet but will let you know what ends up happening with it.

Thank you as always for the input.

The PC probably has some type of pivot software installed on
it.

The Intel Extreme graphics controller allows you to rotate the display, even with hot keys! (<CTRL><ALT> Up, Down, Left, Right) You can turn these off with the control panel.

In my case there is an "Intel Extreme Graphics" icon in Control Panel that lets you manage all these properties.
Not sure why just changing the display resolution causes this, but you might want to poke around in here and see if you can correct the problem.

There is no pivot software...I set it up myself.
It is a plain win98 business machine with an onboard Intel graphics controller.
The display change is a direct result of the change in resolution. No fancy programs or anything installed at all.

I will be doing this one after the holiday. I have to go onsite to sort it out but I will keep everyone posted as to what happens and what resolves it.
As always, most grateful for any suggestions.

Merry CHRISTmas!

It's just going to look a bit silly with the monitor sitting on its side, isn't it?

In my case all the fancy rotation stuff was just installed with the display driver (On a Win2K box). I didn't even know it was there until someone accidently hit CTRL+ALT+uparrow and flipped the display. I would try getting the latest video driver from Intels website.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

To finish up this issue, I wanted to post the resolution I found.

This is a known issue with a particular graphics onboard (rrrr) controller. Can be found on the Intel site.
Intel® 82845G Graphics Controller
System Will Not Change Screen Resolution or Color Depth

Long story short, yes there was some screen flipping software buried...that was not the issue.

The refresh rate needed to be turned down to 60 Hz,after the drivers completely removed for adapter and monitor and reinstalled with the latest and greatest.

When changing the screen resolution, it had to be from the Intel software and not the standard windows slider. If enabled, you can do it right from the taskbar icon.
The only resolutions I could get to work were the standard 800x600 and 1024x768...not the ones in between.

I should never have broken my own rule about onboard graphics...oh well.

Thanks again for the input guys,

Kimber
