Hi

I recently posted a thread re finding a graphics card driver. I don't have a seperate card, it's built in to the motherboard. Someone kindly pointed me in the direction of belarc.com to get a run down of the hardware i'm using, but it's not detecting anyting in the display section.

The motherboard is a Microstar international ms-5187. I've just reinstalled windows 2000, but the graphics are terrible. What do i need to do to sort it out? Do i need to get a driver for the motherboard?

I've also looked in device manager, but there's nothing in display adapters.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot

When you say the graphics are terrible what exactly do you mean?

Do you mean when playing games, or is the resolution really low? What applications?

If you be a bit more specific on what your graphics are currently like and what you would like them to be like maybe someone could help you further.

I've never seen the device manager saying nothing about a display manager, even for a basic 16-color VGA. There must be something.

video-drivers.com seems to have something for this mobo.

From what I see this is an VIA Apollo MVP4 mobo. (this you may see from your device manager) This chipset has an integrated Trident Blade-3D graphics. On the Apollo chipsets, the AGP port, if there's one, has bugs. My suggestion is that you get a PCI graphics card like a radeon 9200. Also, if this is really is the MVP4 chipset, you may want to go to the MSI or the VIA website to verify if there are any drivers or patches available for your OS.

Thanks a lot for your replies.

roycrom - When i say the graphics are bad, i mean the resolution. Just like it would be if you had no graphics driver installed. I'm not trying to run any apps at the mo - the desktop isn't at all clear.

felixc - thanks for your help. I'm gonna check out that video drivers website. It's actually for a friend, so i don't have the machine in front of me. Getting a PCI graphics card definitely sounds like a plan.

Thanks again guys

Sory if it seems like an obvious question but have you tried to change the resolution and amount of colours,

And you said you've just rebuilt your OS, it isn't booting up in 'safe mode' is it? You could get results like this if you are.

It's a possibility i suppose. As i say, it's a friends pc, so i'm kind of working in the dark somewhat and this person isn't very technical!

I managed to find a driver on video-drivers.com for the MS-5187, which i'm going to pass on. I'll also endevour to find out about the state of the display/safemode in case this is where the problem lies.

Thanks again for your help.
