Hi, we have an old PC that was a bit chock-a-block and very slow. We decided to completely wipe the hard disk and re-install Windows 95 and everything else from scratch.
We successfully re-installed Win95 and now the thing boots up in seconds rather than minutes. Only one problem though..... I can't get the original settings for the monitor.

The original settings were 600x800 millions of colors. Now I can only get 16 colors maximum!!!! I've tried and tried playing around with drivers and settings but to no avail.

The monitor is an Optiquest Q71 (17"). I have correctly installed the driver for this. However, when it comes to the actual display adaptor, the only one I can get to work at 600x800 res is SuperVGA.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or what settings I should be using for the display adaptor????

Thanks in advance

The monitor drivers lets you to control the refresh rate of monitor correctly - no more. You have to install driver for videocard but not monitor. After it you will be able to change screen resolution and color depth.

If your videocard not recognized by Windows you have to find out third-party driver. The best way for it is to visit to videocard's manufacturer's website and download the latest version of driver especially for Win'95.

The card model and manufacturer usially written on the card. If not, try to find the FCC-ID code written on the card and visit to to identify your card's model and manufacturer.

If there is not FCC-ID code on board, you may visit to and download the tool will help your to identify your system's parts.
