About 5 times, after being on the net and without touching the mouse or keyboard, items get highlighted and action moves from one item to the next all down a section then the page scrolls up. If I close the page, whatever page I'm on does the same thing. At desktop, previous icon starts flashing (in this case, My Computer). When I click on start, and the closing box comes up, up and down it goes on the 4 closing options. Sometimes the mouse won't do anything...click and nothing so have to just shut down the computer and have it rescan. Thanks for reading this.

This almost sounds like you've got "sticky keys." Could be your tab key, could be the shift, dunno. Keyboards seem to comprehend the "command" (ha ha) to get rid of sticky keys. Believe it or not, try hitting your right shift key about 10 times repeatedly. Not really fast or really hard, just about 3 times per second maybe. If that doesn't work, see if another keyboard gives the same behavior.
And hey, I could be way off base!
Has this only happened when you were on the net? If so and you find out that a key is not stuck, then it may be a conflict with your modem settings. Go into your control panel and enter the systems setup. See if maybe your keyboard is using the same IRQ or Memory address as your modem.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! The guy who built my computer today came over and updated the video driver which he says can effect the mouse. Time will tell if this works. I printed and read the suggestions and he seems to think that the 4 button mouse and the Rivia TNT2 have a conflict so I need to use it like a 2 button mouse. Again, thanks so much!!
