What could be causing the system tool, disk defragmenter, to lock up the computer at 6%? Is there any way that I can remedy this problem?

Try doing an advanced disk check to see if you have any bad sectors. If that doesn't find anything wrong then it could be another program in the background causing it to stop if so hit control-alt-delete and remove all applications except explorer, then try again.

Have you done scandisk first? Maybe it is trying read data that the FAT is misreporting. We should always do scandisk first then defrag.

I would recommend that you run scandisk under safemode.

What do you mean by lock up. Are you totally locked out in that you lose access, to the mouse for example, or does everything appear OK except it seems to be 'stuck' at 6%. In the first case we have a problem with possible solutions cited by my fellow responders but in the second case there may not be a problem.

Shut down your AV and unecessary programs during defrag.

Right now, you occupy a point where three lines reach across the expanse of time and space and intersect only there, and that you and only you possess.
