I have two sticks of 258Mb ECC DDR RAM in my system, I recently removed them, to test another memory stick which worked fine. When I refitted the original memory sticksin to the same slots, I noticed my system was running slower, on further investigating only 258Mb was being detected. I've ruled out ESD damage to the memory as the correct precautions were taken, and I'm sure that they are physically fitted correctly into the slots. Please help!

Well, unfortunately you can never rule out ESD since even the slightest discharge can cause damage. It would be best to try the two modules in another system. Also, you could try each stick by itself one at a time to identify if one's shot.

I've taken your advice cdogg, and each sticks work on it's own. Neither is blown, pheww! When I put them back as a pair, still no joy... but get this ..when I swap them around using the same slots, both are detected, 516Mb. I swap them back, thinking that one must have been making a bad contact or something! Only 256mb is detected again! Swap them back again and 516Mb is detected. Not sure why this is happening but I have got the result I was looking for, so who cares!

i recommend a memtest, let it run over night (memtest/prime95), one of the sticks is to 99% damaged.

Memory sticks have to be seated perfectly!
Sometimes you think that they're in place when they're not...
If either stick is faulty your system will produce "random" crashes pretty soon,so you'll know.
