Disabled service, now I can't boot

I did something stupid - disabed the RPC service. Now my PC won't boot, even in Safe Mode. I tried to do a "non-destructive" restore via the PC restoration utility (this restores the system without formatting and losing data). That didn't help.

Is there a way I can re-enable a service without doing a full boot (perhaps via a command prompt?). I'll never disable a service again!

Any help would be MOST appreciated!!

Thanks,
Tom

You can try restarting the service from the cmd line by
booting into safe command line mode after hitting F8 on boot up. Type
net start "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"
(using the "quote" marks) and this should get the servie running again. Then type:
Explorer
to restart the windows shell and make sure that you enable the service from services.msc.

Hope this helps.

If you have an OEM Recovery CD you might not be able to use the Recovery Console directly to "Enable" this service but there is a slight chance you could use the 6 downloadable floppies and enter that way. Worth a try.

Maybe this might work.

How to Use System Files to Create a Boot Disk to Guard Against Being Unable to Start Windows XP (Q314079)

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

If you do get into the Recovery Console look up the "Enable" command.

It might be worth checking with your OEM Support and see if they can get you into the Recovery Console.
