Hi,
using Windows XP SP3 when I attach USB key to my laptop a new device is recognized.

But when I try to click on "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from system tray there are two options "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device" and "Safely remove CD-ROM".

Sometimes I by mistake select CD-ROM instead of USB key and my internal cd-rom is disabled.

Is there any way I can remove CD-ROM from "safely remove hardware" list?
Thanks,
Grofaty

Is this a Laptop with a CD Drive that has a removable bay and is replaceable with a Floppy drive if you wish?

Have you expanded the USB notification details by putting a tick in the box "Display device components" on the Safely Remove Hardware window?

There is a similar discussion of your problem in this link, a quick glance did not show me any obvious solution but I didn't wade through all of them.

You are probably left clicking "safely remove hardware"

Try right click the "safely remove hardware"
then left click [safely remove hardware]
then check [display device components]

each device will be obvious like iPod, Flash Drive, CD/DVD etc. click one and click stop.

FYI in win2k you needed to "safely remove hardware" because of a buffering issue but from what I've read you no longer need to do this in XP. I have not done this since I installed XP and have has no problems.

@linney, it is removable usb drive that can be replaced by floppy drive. But I never use floppy drive, because floppy is device from history... I never pull out cd-rom drive. So I don't need this option.

@mscallisto, I know I can click right or left button on icon. I use Windows for more then 10 years, so I have tried many things, but I just can't find out the solution to disable this cd-rom drive on "safely remove hardware" list.

Is there any settings in registry or something?

This app: got my RAID array out the choices even though they probably would not have stopped, I didn't want even the remotest possibly of one of the system drives being stopped. It's a powerful little program and well worth the $14 I paid for it. It's got a lot of tweaks and is fun to use, and simplifies the whole process. Best of luck!

@wahnula, thanks for tip. But I am looking into one free solution.

The problem for you that what you are seeing is by design as these articles tend to confirm.

You do not receive the "Safe to remove hardware" message when you click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Windows XP

Would disabling the CD drive via Device Manager offer a workaround of sorts, but that would require you to enable it again as and when you wanted to use it?

See how you go with "dippncope's" link, it sounds like that may be your best bet.
