on my computer the hardware wizard won't stop popping up for everything, like my mouse, and random other things
it really gets in the way
how do i disable its auto detect

Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Turn off the "Shell Hardware Detection" service.

Note: This will also disable autoplay on your CD/DVD drives.

Have you actually installed this hardware to completion or was it blocked by Driver Signing?

To set file signature verification options
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Hardware tab, click Driver Signing.
Under File signature verification, click one of the choices.

The New Hardware Wizard May Detect the Printer Device After Every Restart of the Computer (Q298370)

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
